The advantages that can be achieved with Carbo-Battens over standard off-the-shelf sail battens are, amongst others:

second battens which are stiffer, for use in heavy weather. This supports the leach better, keeps the top 1/3rd of the sail flatter and ensures efficient exhaust across the leach. All these things add to the rig being more controllable, more easily
depowered for upwind legs and retaining excellent gust response for reaching and running. The speed differences in modern rigs are small so it is important to get the rig accelerating, it is acceleration that will give the biggest advantages on the race track.
